By Ed Moore "If you never thought a Beatles song could be converted to
a jazz standard, then you should have heard the Fab Four
as rendered by Carmen and David. The Chautauqua show on March 13, performed by the Quebec
City duo of Carmen Genest and David Jacques, featured a
set of four Beatles songs: Ticket to Ride, Blackbird,
The Fool on the Hill and I Wanna Be Your Man, all expertly
handled by Genest, with terrific guitar accompaniment by
husband Jacques and saxophonist Alain Baril. For those
who aren't familiar with jazz, it's like musical improvisation.
It allows singers and musicians to think out of the box or
redesign another one, if you prefer. And with Carmen and
David there was a lot of that going on. Jazz standards were handled with aplomb. The first song
of the evening was the Gershwin-Ella Fitzgerald standard,
A Foggy Day (in London Town). It featured some appropriate
scatting by Carmen. The scatting could have been in
French but I neglected to ask. Other selections included:
My Paris, Love for Sale, Misty, All of Me, and the
Edith Piaf signature song, La vie en rose. The timbre, diversity and overall quality of Carmen's
voice is something to admire. She is in her eighth
month of pregnancy, and if Genest was uncomfortable
throughout the performance, she didn't show it. Prior
to Edson, the duo performed in Fort McMurray on
March 12. St. Albert was their next stop on March 14.
The Alberta appearances marked more than 600 concert
appearances across Canada, the U.S. the world by the duo.
Carmen and David have also performed in South America,
Europe and Asia. Once again, kudos to Chautauqua for
its ability to bring in such an impressive variety
of musical talent. The final show in the Chautauqua
season will be Hockey Dad on April 24."
